According to the International Coaching Federation (ICF), coaching is defined as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. The process of coaching often unlocks previously untapped sources of imagination, productivity and leadership.”

The role of an ADHD Life Coach isn’t to tell you what to do. Instead, they focus on helping you understand your present circumstances, create your own system for making the changes you desire, and support you in staying on track to achieving your goals. What sets them apart from other coaches is that an ADHD Life Coach has received specialized training in ADHD. They can help you anticipate and overcome its unique challenges and harness the benefits to your advantage.

Through inquiry and exploration, a great coach can help you build trust in yourself to make confident decisions about your next steps based on what’s meaningful to you.

Unlike therapy, which may focus on healing and resolving emotional difficulties from the past, coaching focuses primarily on developing actions and strategies for change in the present and the future.

While it’s possible to achieve goals without a coach, the support of a coach allows you to make progress more quickly and develop deeper insight and self-awareness than if you were to do it alone. Coaching can help you establish personalized approaches and tactics you can continue using in the future to achieve your goals.

What Coaching Is…

  • Coaching is an effective component of a multi-modal approach to treating or working with ADHD.

  • Coaching is a practice that cultivates new perspectives, self-awareness and more freedom of choice.

  • Coaching helps you become aware of what’s in your blind spots.

  • Coaching is flexible and tailored to your individual needs. I don’t use a one-size-fits-all approach; I’m here to help you tap into what works for you and no one else.

  • Coaching is non-judgmental and respectful. My number one priority is creating a safe container for us to work in together. All of our conversations are confidential.

What Coaching is Not…

  • Coaching is not a replacement for psychotherapy or medication. I can’t give medical advice, and I am not a therapist or medical professional.

  • Coaching is not consulting, mentoring, or tutoring. We are equals here, and while we may go over psychoeducational topics, I am not prescriptive.

  • Coaching is not about fixing you. We may work on changing systems that aren’t serving you, but you do not need fixing— you are creative, resourceful and whole, just as you are.

  • Coaching is not quick and easy. To see meaningful changes in your life, you will need to commit to putting your new awareness and strategies into action.
